Golf Instruction- Finding a Consistent Golf Swing

It is typical for a golfer, trying to improve, to search for a consistent golf swing method. Over the years I have heard the common complaint from students that they just are not consistent. They will hit one good shot followed by two bad ones and on and on. It is important that if you want to improve you must develop a method that allows you to be consistent.

The very first thing I ask a student when asked to make their swing more consistent is do they have a golf swing routine? If your approach to hitting a golf ball with every swing is different how do you expect to be able to repeat it. This is no different than in other sports that require physical discipline. For example, have you ever payed attention to a professional basketball player shooting a foul shot? You will find that the good free throw shooters duplicate their movements on every shot. If they dribble the ball six times before shooting they repeat that motion each time with every foul shot. By keeping the same routine they are able to become consistent. Apply this thought to your golf swing. Make your approach to hitting a golf shot the same every time.

In order to repeat your golf swing on a consistent basis you must swing the club in balance. Any wild swinging, out of control golf swing will absolutely guarantee inconsistency. Good golf swing balance starts with a good set up. Make sure you are in an athletic position with your knees flexed, bent slightly at the waist, feet about shoulders width apart and your weight evenly distributed on both feet. Make sure your weight is not on your toes or on your heels but evenly distributed between your right and left foot. It will be much easier to keep in balance from a good starting position.

Ther is no substitute  or shortcut that eliminates the need to practice. There is no way that you can improve and become a consistent golfer without the commitment to practice. It should not surprise you that the golfer dedicated to practice as a rule generally improves faster. Practice will improve your routine and your balance. There is no pill to take that will eliminate the need to practice in order to become consistent.

Find your individual tempo and practice with tempo in mind to create a more reliable golf swing. There is no single tempo that is right for every golfer. Find the tempo that fits your personality and incorporate it into your practice regimen. If you have a video camera, take some shots of your golf swing. Tempo is a hard thing to feel. If you look out of control and off balance, try to slow your tempo a bit. Remember, it is not how hard you swing but rather how squarely you strike the golf ball that will lead to consistency.

    Hi,

Consistency is true with just about anything so why should people believe it is not true with golf? The only caveat I will throw out is if you are consistently practicing the wrong swing that could be less beneficial. Though, over time a swing tends to correct itself a little through practice. But this was a great post. I am signing up for your blog.
